The staff that support our international students are not immigration attorneys so they are not able to provide legal advise or assistance on areas outside of F-1 rules and regulations. However, many students do find they need legal advice or assistance for situations outside of their F-1 student status. Here are a few outside resources that students might find helpful. American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)
Founded in 1946, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, voluntary bar association that provides continuing legal education, professional services, information, and expertise to more than 16,000 attorney who practice and teach immigration law. The site is for general information only, and does not provide legal advice. The site is a tool to assist in finding an immigration attorney In the event that you need to seek legal counsel. National Immigration Law Center
Established in 1979, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) is an advocacy organization in the US that is dedicated to advancing and defending the rights and opportunities of low-income immigrants and their loved ones. Their resources page holds a lot of information, fact sheets and search options based on the situation. The Know Your Rights: What to do is you are arrested or detained by immigration has a lot of information that is good to know before something happens.
NILC has also published a helpful FAQ about the recent rule requiring all non-immigrants to register with The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that went into effect April 11,2025. There is also additional information on the USCIS website, including details on what documents are used to show that registration has been completed.
International Student Resource Center
The International Student Resource Center (ISRC) provided comprehensive and timely immigration and visa information and support to international students and scholars studying and working in the US. The ISRC has created a tool that students can use to help determine how future travel will impact your I-94 (AUD) and if an extension will be required to maintain status.
