2016 Wynalda Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI):  Call for Proposals Coming!

This internal conference for Davenport University faculty is designed to be a collaborative, engaging, and supportive environment for faculty to come together to talk about teaching and their professional practices.  Each year we also bring in outside speakers.

2014 Theme: Future classroom is here NOW: Envisioning the Future of Education and Technology at DU

At Davenport we work to help our students "Get where the world is going" but how do we as educators know where OUR world of education is going?

The 2014 Wynalda Teaching and Learning Institute will focus on sharing research, insights, and ideas on topics related to the future of higher education. Together we can explore future directions for assessment strategies, emerging technologies in the classroom, alternative delivery methods (like VISL, accelerated courses, boot camps, flipped class, new technology “blends”), collaboration in the classroom, creative usages of technologies to support learning, as well as explorations of the shifting demographics and community shifts that impact our work as educators.

This theme has been further described in three learning tracks, each with its own area of focus connected to future realities impacting our work in higher education:

Learning Track 1-- Inputs: Our future students
Learning Track 2-- Outputs: Our future graduates
Learning Track 3-- Environment: Our future classroom

2015 Theme: Wynalda Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI) - Inspired Teaching and Learning for an Intercultural World

This year's event will address the following questions:

  • What / who inspires you to teach?
  • How do you inspire students to learn?
  • How do you build effective, inspirational relationships with students and colleagues across distance, cultures, and individual differences? How does technology impact these connections?
  • How do you stay connected to students, colleagues, and realities of the professional work your students will be called to do?
  • Who inspires you to be your best self?
  • Who challenges you to flex your own style and preferences?
  • What connections in your communities of practice support and inspire you to continually build cultural competence?

Connections can build or undermine inspiration. The 2015 Wynalda Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI) focuses on the ways connections across and within multiple cultures inspire and challenge us as as teachers and as learners.

Conference Location, Dates, and Logistics

Wynalda Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI) will be held Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI. Conference workshops and general sessions will convene on the W.A. Lettinga Campus. Lodging for faculty commuting from outside the Grand Rapids area will be provided at a local hotel.

All faculty, including adjuncts, distinguished adjuncts, full-time faculty and lab coordinators as well as full-time library staff and academic leaders are invited to present and participate in this event, either in-person or virtually via web streaming and online resources.

We are working to increase adjunct participation in this event-- distinguished adjuncts and any adjunct who is presenting are invited to participate in the live event. Currently, all other adjuncts are invited to participate online via live streaming.

For those presenters and full-time faculty attending the in-person event in Grand Rapids, hotel rooms will be double occupancy and mileage will be reimbursed for groups of 3 traveling together from other campuses. Full information on these and other logistical details will be provided later during the registration process.

Please note that many of the conference sessions, including breakouts, will be LiveStreamed and/ or recorded. By agreeing to present at this conference, you are agreeing that your session can be LiveStreamed and/ or recorded for ongoing educational use by Davenport University students, faculty, staff, or community members.
