International Tax Information

1098-T

With a 1098-T, the business — your college — reports how much qualified tuition and expenses you (or your parents) paid it during the tax year. If you receive a Form 1098-T, any financial aid received during the tax year will be displayed in Box 5. Note that if your tuition and fees were entirely covered by financial aid, you will not receive a Form 1098-T. Schools  must file for each student they enroll and for whom a reportable transaction is made. The information on the form may be needed if you are required to file a US tax return.

TL11A

For Canadian students who need to have the TL11A (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate-University Outside Canada) tax form completed, please send the form to duar@davenport.edu.  Please note the TL11A in the subject line and be sure to include your student ID number and the fiscal year needed.  This will make it easier for the AR department to find your account information and complete the form.

US Tax filing

If you worked in the US then you will be required to file a US tax return for the fiscal year in which you worked.  The filing deadline for taxes each year is April 15th. F-1 students must file a 1040NR tax form which most online tax software platforms do not support.  Davenport offers assistance through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) to help students and community members in filing their taxes.  You can find more information at: https://taxhelp.davenport.edu/

There are several companies that can assist students in filing their taxes so you can ensure they are done correctly.  Most of them do charge a fee so be aware and confirm that before you start the process.  Companies should be very up front on the fees so you know going in what you will have to pay.

Sprintax offers a guide for F1 students filing a return, which you can find here. You can file your return with Sprintax right from the guide, if you find their services and fees acceptable.  They are not the only company out there but they are fully IRS (Internal Revenue Service) compliant and many other schools work directly with the company.
