Student & Advisor Responsibilities

Welcome to academic advising at Davenport!   Your advisor will assist you in defining and developing realistic academic, career and personal goals, and work with you to create an educational plan that is consistent with these goals.   Your advisor may assist in selecting courses, answering questions related to academic programs and policies, discussing curriculum change implications, reviewing progress towards graduation, and referring you to and encouraging the use of services, resources, and opportunities at Davenport University.  However, YOU are the key to your academic success. 

WE EXPECT YOU WILL BE …

ACTIVELY ENGAGED

  • Understand your curriculum and graduation requirements as stated in the academic catalog
  • Understand University and department policies and procedures, seeking guidance and clarification as needed
  • Familiarize yourself with the academic calendar and be aware of critical dates and deadlines for registration, drop/add and course withdrawals
  • Clarify your personal, educational and career goals, seeking career services as needed
  • Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience

ACCOUNTABLE

  • Be on time and prepared for scheduled appointments
  • Follow through on suggested actions and referrals in a timely manner
  • Maintain a personal record of your academic progress
  • Accept responsibility for academic decisions and performance
  • Maintain updated contact information in Student Connection

RESPONSIVE

  • Respond to all student alert notifications in a timely manner and engage with instructor and/or advisor to resolve the concern
  • Check your PantherMail regularly (2-3 times per week, during and between semesters) for University correspondence; respond in a timely manner and/or complete any tasks noted in that communication

YOUR ADVISOR WILL OFFER …

BIG-PICTURE PLANNING

  • Assist you in defining and developing realistic academic, career and personal goals, and assist you in creating an educational plan that is consistent with these goals
  • Review curriculum and graduation requirements with you
  • Respond to your questions about University and department policies and procedures 

ADVOCACY

  • Listen carefully to your concerns and, when appropriate, work with you to create an action plan to resolve concerns
  • Respect your individual values and choices
  • Be available to answer general questions related to financial aid, billing/balances, book vouchers, etc in a timely manner through scheduled meetings or email communication 
  • Match your needs with available resources and make appropriate referrals

ACADEMIC GUIDANCE

  • Review academic progress with you on a semester and/or annual basis, providing registration assistance as needed
  • Work with you to assess your academic performance and areas of strength to ensure they are consistent with your educational plan
  • Contact you in a timely manner if student alert is submitted by your instructor
