Why increase the number of graduates who have studied abroad?

  • Our workforce needs international experience: 72% of business leaders urge colleges and universities to pay greater attention to global issues.
  • Study abroad improves world language skills: Recent federal reports cite a language and cultural skill shortage in more than 70 agencies critical to national security, public diplomacy and economic competitiveness.
  • Study abroad accelerates personal growth and builds intercultural  competencies: over 90% of Davenport students who studied abroad in the past five years (2009 to 2013) reported feeling greater acceptance of differences, appreciation for other cultures, greater ability to adapt to new situations, and greater interest in world events.
  • Corporate participants in a nation-wide study indicated that a critical new human resource requirement is cross-cultural competence – openness and adaptability to different cultural perspectives, a willingness to learn, and functionality in another language.  What is needed is to experience day-to-day life in another culture. 

Why is it imperative for students to gain both a global and intercultural competence?

U.S. stability and prosperity is linked to world partnerships - for the following reasons:

  • U.S. international trade has more than doubled every decade since 1960, and it now totals over $2.5 trillion annually, or fifty times what it was just forty years ago!
  • One in five U.S. manufacturing jobs are now tied to exports! 
  • The number of globalized workers – those who make products for export and cross borders to perform services across cultures has quadrupled since 1980!
