With an extensive background in health information technology and management and health care administration, Linda Sorensen serves as the chairperson for both the Health Information Management and Allied Health Departments in the College of Health Professions. She is also the program director for the associate and bachelor degrees in health information technology (HIT) and health information management (HIM) and oversees the Master’s in Health Informatics and Information Management Program.

Professor Sorensen has a multitude of experience in the health care field in roles which have included HIM department director, manager, supervisor, utilization review specialist, and privacy officer. Her experience includes large hospital systems, long-term care, and rehabilitation facilities. Professor Sorensen has been involved in hospital reorganizations and moving of an entire hospital to a new facility while working with staff on new roles and extensive training in health information functions. Currently, Professor Sorensen is involved in health information management at the national level as a member of the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Primary Taskforce developing the direction for the future of the HIM profession. She is also a member of AHIMA’s Council for Excellence in Education programming workgroup and a member of the AHIMA Faculty & Student Mentor Program. Professor Sorensen has served as an elected member on the Michigan Health Information Management’s (MHIMA) Nominating Committee and as an AHIMA member on the global curriculum taskforce.

Professor Sorensen is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) through AHIMA and holds a certification in Health Care Privacy and Security (CHPS) also through AHIMA. She teaches courses in the HIT and HIM programs which are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM). Professor Sorensen is a certified ICD-10 trainer and holds a faculty badge for faculty mentoring through AHIMA.

A presenter at the AHIMA Assembly on Education’s national conventions in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 on educational topics and best practices offered at Davenport University, Professor Sorensen maintains high visibility and active networks in the HIM industry. Her current research interest includes the need for a doctoral degree in HIM.
