With an expertise in perinatal nursing, Cherie’ Reitzel serves as Nursing Faculty for the Mable Engle Nursing Program. In this role she is engaged in teaching courses for the Baccalaureate and Practical Nursing programs. Courses she is currently teaching or has taught in past semesters include Nursing of the Childbearing Family, Health Assessment in Nursing, Nursing of Adults, Health Assessment Lab, and Obstetrical and Pediatric simulation labs. She also serves as the Peer to Peer Mentoring coordinator for the Warren campus nursing students.

Cherie’ has over 25 years of obstetrical nursing experience, with Antepartum High Risk, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Newborn Nursing being her areas of clinical expertise. Prior to transitioning to her academic role, Cherie’ worked as a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Borgess Medical Center (BMC). Additional roles at BMC included charge nurse responsibilities, fetal monitoring instructor, unit-based preceptor/mentor, maintenance of the daily unit staffing schedules, nursing policy development in the care of obstetrical clients, policy development in Emergency & Disaster Preparedness, and development of multiple in-services for nursing staff including management of epidural anesthesia in the laboring woman and second-stage labor management. Cherie’ has worked in Level III high risk tertiary centers, in addition to level II centers. Cherie’ has also served as adjunct faculty at Grand Rapids Community College and Baker College, teaching obstetrical nursing courses, prior to joining Davenport University in 2013. She has also served as a Risk Manager for the American Powerboat Association, overseeing the safety of offshore race sites in the Midwest.

Cherie’ is a member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). She has been an AWHONN Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Instructor since 2008 and currently teaches AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring courses for the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Borgess Medical Center. She has also been actively mentoring new AWHONN instructors throughout the DMC. Cherie’ also serves a Nurse Educator at the DMC, overseeing and teaching AWHONN Intermediate EFM courses, developing annual competencies for the Women’s Service Line nursing units, teaching Basic Cardiac Life Support classes, teaching Obstetrical Nursing orientation classes, and assisting with hospital orientation and various in-service presentations. In addition, as a hospital-based nurse educator for the DMC, Cherie’ has developed and implemented the Obstetrical Nursing orientation program for new nurses employed at Hutzel Women’s Hospital.
