Credit For Prior Learning

Get Credit for What You've Already Learned and Accomplished:

You can earn academic credit for a course if you produce a completed petition detailing your college-level learning gained through career and personal experience. This can include job-related activities and community participation, as well as experience based on training from specialized schools or testing programs.

You may submit your petition at any time of the year. The petitions are then assessed by faculty evaluators, and credit is assigned based on merit.

Credit Opportunites:

Prior Learning Assessment Portfolio

If you've gained college-level learning through your career and personal experience - whether in a job-related activity, community participation, or specialized training, just complete a petition outlining your experience and find out if it qualifies for credit for a course. Petitions are assessed by faculty, and credit is assigned based on merit. If you're a current student, you can learn more about PLA by clicking here.

Testing

Davenport awards credit when you achieve a passing score on the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), DSST, Advanced Placement, and Credit by Exam programs or approved national certification exams. Some exams are offered on-site through the Library. See Testing Services for more information.

Military Experience

Earn credit for knowledge you've acquired through specialized training and experience in military service.  DU meets all Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) criteria, and awards credit when you submit the appropriate military records to the Registrar's Office.

The American Council on Education's Alternative Credit Project (ACP)

This program provides a pool of low-cost online courses that Davenport will accept as transfer credit towards your degree. A national program of the American Council on Education, supported by a generous grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the ACP is designed to help adults finish what they started—a two-or four-year degree or a postsecondary certificate. Learn more at DU’s ACE ACP homepage.

Corporate/non-collegiate Training

Based on the recommendation of the National Program on non-collegiate Sponsored Instruction, credit may be granted for educational programs sponsored by non-collegiate organizations (including labor, government, business, associations, private training organizations).  Contact the Registrar's Office for more information.

Academic Service-Learning

Students that are in the academic service-learning course apply their skills to real-world issues in the non-profit and government sectors through projects and placements with community organizations.  Davenport believes strongly in helping students to become involved, productive citizens in their communities. **Please note** Credit For Prior Learning (CPL) options are also available for students in Davenport's graduate degree programs.
