Alumni Mentor Network

Description: Davenport University is excited to announce its third annual Alumni Mentor Network program from the 2019/2020 school year for 20 student/mentor pairs. The mentorship program allows Davenport University alumni to share their experiences with student leaders preparing for the professional world. Each student is paired with an alumni mentor based on similar interests and meet on a monthly basis throughout the duration of the program.

Alumni Eligibility: As an alumnus exploring mentorship, you are a guide, friend and resource who shares your education and professional experience to help pave the way for students to succeed at Davenport University and beyond. A successful mentor derives satisfaction from helping students fulfill their potential.

Student Eligibility: As a current sophomore, junior or senior student who is looking for a mentor, you are someone who strives to go the extra mile. You see a mentor as someone who can help you with your goals and aspirations while advising you on decisions and plans. A successful mentee knows the value in building relationships with others.

Student Selection Process: The student application is open from August 1 – September 13. Students will be selected and notified by September 16. See the schedule below.

Program Structure: Our mentor program is flexible – the mentor and the student can decide how the relationship will work. To have a successful mentor relationship, we will require you to commit to the following:

  • Engage in one meaningful connection once per month (minimum)
  • Attend the opening and closing receptions
  • Set expectations for how and when you will contact each other
  • Helping to identify and set goals, track progress and make changes
  • Approach mentoring relationship with an open mind, professionalism and respect
  • Support each other’s professional and personal development
  • Respond to communications in a timely manner
  • Maintain and model professional behavior. Define professional behavior if needed.
  • Communicate problems with the mentoring relationship to Alumni & Development at or by calling (616) 233-3419.

Training: We will ask mentors and students to attend a training session with tips to help build a great relationship. We will cover goal setting and expectations, topics the students might need help with and how to offer constructive feedback.

Lunch and Learn Series:  In addition to the mentor relationship, we have collaborated with area businesses to create a Lunch and Learn Series that will feature prominent alumni and community leaders. Sessions take the mentors and mentees to workplaces of alumni or community leaders where students are exposed to experiences such as leadership team panels and behind-the-scenes tours. The sessions provide an intimate and interactive setting to network, connect with employers and expose students to different types of businesses. There will be 4 Lunch and Learn Series between October - February.
